Entry Requirements

To be eligible to enter the Bachelor of Biomedicine (Degree with Honours) or the Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours), applicants must satisfy both:

  • the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences or Faculty of Science entry requirements;
  • and the requirements of the department offering the Honours program.

Please note: demonstrated eligibility does not guarantee a place in the Honours program. All successful applicants will also need to be selected for admission by the department.

The University of Melbourne handbook contains detailed information about the subjects available and entry requirements for departments offering Honours. The 2016 handbook is available at https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au.

Bachelor of Biomedicine (Degree with Honours)

The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant’s ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criteria:

  • completion of the Bachelor of Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne
  • a Weighted  Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65%

Notes:

  • The WAM weights subjects to reflect their credit value. This is calculated by multiplying the mark received for each subject against that subject's credit point value (i.e. 12.5 for most undergraduate subjects offered at the University of Melbourne). Each multiplication is then added together and then divided by the total amount of credit points for subjects undertaken (i.e. 300 for the B-BMED and B-SCI).
  • The Selection Committee may conduct interviews and tests and may call for referee reports or employer references to elucidate any of the matters referred to above.
  • Entry into an Honours program is subject to the capacity of the department(s) or schools(s) offering the program to provide adequate supervision in a project appropriate to the interests and preparation of the individual student.
  • Selection is not automatic and in particular is subject to competition, to any relevant quotas, and to the availability of supervision and resources in suitable project areas.

Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours)

The Selection Committee will evaluate the applicant’s ability to pursue successfully the course using the following criteria:

  • a three-year undergraduate degree, of which at least the equivalent of two full years comprises science or technology areas of study,
  • at least 50 points of study (one half of a full year) completed at third year level in science or technology areas of study,
  • a Weighted  Average Mark (WAM) of at least 65%.

This is calculated by multiplying the mark received for each subject against that subject's credit point value (i.e. 12.5 for most undergraduate subjects offered at the University of Melbourne).
