Interprofessional Education and Practice
The University of Melbourne's Interprofessional Education and Practice Health Students' Network (IPEP HSN), established in 2013, is the first of its kind in Australia. IPEP HSN links students from all health disciplines across the University and consists of 30 students, both Office Bearers and Displine Representatives. Some of the key roles of the Council the students are working on include:
- Curriculum reviews and development
- Interprofessional education opportunities
- Networking events
- Integration of other disciplines into curriculum events such as the MD Student Conference
The Chair of the Faculty's Clinical Placements and Interprofessional Education Committee, Prof. Steve Trumble, welcomed the Council's creation:
"Interprofessional education is much more than just sharing learning activities. Through student-driven initiatives such as the IPEP Student Council, the Faculty's students are demonstrating their leadership and commitment to healthcare teamwork. The Council provides an important platform for comunication and collaboration across the breadth of our health professional courses."
The Clinical Placements and Interprofessional Education Committee acts as the hosting body for support and guidance of the Student Council, as well as acting as an open channel for communication betwen staff and students with the student Presidents sitting on the committee.
"It's not a question of whether or not this should happen, most people are surprised to hear that it hasn't happened yet!" commented Ms Jacqueline Geroche.
"There is so much enthusiasm from students and staff. It will be great to see the Council establish itself and engage with all disciplines," said Mr Joseph Monteith (IPEP HSN Founder). "Collaboration starts now, not once we get to the workplace. The more we know about each other, the better we can provide patient-centred care. Gone are the days where one practitioner can do everything."
